The prime minister inaugurated the ‘Sheikh Hasina Bridge’ on Mahananda River at Sadar Upazila on Saturday during a visit there.

“Seven Upazilas of Chapainawabganj were cut off from the town hampering communication and economic activities,” local government ministry's acting Secretary Abdul Malek said.

The 546-metre bridge will ease commuting for residents in these Upazilas where about 80 percent of the total farmland is covered by mango orchards.

Malek said: “Economic activities of the people of those areas have been boosted by this bridge.”

Hasina laid the bridge’s foundation on April 23, 2011, which Malek said was named after the prime minister “in keeping with the people's demand."

Planning ministry director Taskera Khatun hails from the area.

“We had to suffer a lot while going to [village] home,” she recalled. “Now we can go home quite easily.”

The prime minister also inaugurated a youth training centre, a substation of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) and an eye hospital, among others.
